Cup winner Lewis targets success as BBL referee

Cup winner Lewis targets success as BBL referee

Manchester Magic point guard Lewis van Deursen is now a qualified Level 3 basketball referee.

The 18-year-old from Stockport, who was a member of Magic’s all-conquering U18 National Cup team, began officiating at the age of 11 at the Sport For All Centre in Reddish.

“I started refereeing so I could stay involved in basketball when I wasn’t playing at weekends,” he said. “It also gave me the chance to earn some money.”
Now, when he’s not playing, Lewis is refereeing junior National Basketball League games across the region. He will soon make the step up to senior games.

“I’d love to referee at BBL level and get my Level 4 and 5 qualifications,” he said. “I just want to stay involved in basketball.”

Does Lewis find it hard to bite his tongue when he’s playing and a referee makes a call?

“Yep, sometimes,” he said. “You have to keep the two separate. You have to put your playing head on and then your refereeing head. You have to work hard at it.”

Lewis is just one of dozens of boys and girls being mentored by Rick Dell, who is in his fifth year of running the referees programme for the Magic and Mystics.

“Rick is doing a fantastic job of bringing through the next generation of officials,” said club CEO Phil Gordos. “We identified a need to recruit more young referees back in 2017 and to see Lewis gain his Level 3 qualification is testament to the work that has gone on here.

“I want to thank Rick and Dave Woods, who have taken a leading role in this valuable project.”

Magic and Mystics Families against violence

Magic and Mystics launch project to help keep Manchester youth safe

Manchester Magic and Manchester Mystics have joined forces with Families Against Violence to offer free weekly basketball sessions to children and young adults living in Manchester thanks to funding from Sport England.

The aim of the project is to target those who are at risk of becoming involved in youth violence by offering them a safe haven to play and the chance to take part in a sport that has the potential to offer them life-changing opportunities.

“This is an exciting opportunity for youngsters in Manchester and also raises awareness of some of the issues facing our communities,” said James Gregory, who runs Families Against Violence, a charity helping disadvantaged young people.

Phil Gordos, CEO of Greater Manchester Community Basketball, which runs the Manchester Magic and Manchester Mystics junior programmes, added: “We are always looking for ways to engage children and young adults in the local community.

“We believe this project can make a real difference and open up opportunities for youngsters where they may not have existed before.

“It wouldn’t have been possible without the funding from Sport England, so I’m extremely grateful for its generous financial support.”

The two-month project starts on Sunday, 8 September, running from 6pm-9pm at the Manchester Basketball Centre in Wilbraham Road (M16 8GW) and from 5-6pm at Trinity Sports Centre in Cambridge Street (M15 6HP).

The sessions are free and there is no need to book in advance.

Our qualified coaches will also be handing out free t-shirts and basketballs.

New development sessions for Primary School Players

From 8 February, our Friday sessions at the Manchester Basketball Centre will change.

The current drop-in league for players at primary school will replaced by a 90-minute development session for Years 1-6.

It will start with some coaching to develop a player’s knowledge and understanding of basketball fundamentals. Then it will move into games, giving players the chance to put their new-found skills into practice.

We’ve decided to make this change in order to enhance the work we do with our younger players and following requests from players and parents for a session such as this.

Paul Cantwell will be overseeing the new development sessions. A former Manchester Magic player who came through the junior ranks here, Paul is a Level 2 coach who has worked with young players in the UK and the USA.

The new sessions will run from 5.30-7pm and cost £4. The drop-in league for Years 7-9 will now run from 7-8pm.
